How Often Should You Actually Post on Social Media in 2026?

The “post every day” advice isn’t wrong, but it’s not the whole story either. Here’s what actually determines the right posting frequency for your business.

Every year someone publishes a study claiming the “ideal” posting frequency is some suspiciously precise number, and every year businesses burn themselves out chasing it. The real answer isn’t a number. It’s a question: can you actually sustain whatever frequency you pick for the next six months?

Why "the right number" is the wrong question

Platforms don’t reward volume for its own sake — they reward accounts that consistently give people a reason to stick around. A business posting three sharp, considered posts a week will usually outperform one posting daily filler, because both the algorithm and the audience are responding to engagement, not frequency. Posting more only helps if what you’re posting is worth someone’s time.

What actually determines your frequency

Capacity is the honest starting point, not ambition. A team that can realistically produce two genuinely good posts a week should post twice a week — not commit to daily and quietly stop after three weeks when it becomes unsustainable. A frequency you can’t sustain isn’t a strategy, it’s a countdown to an abandoned account, which hurts more than posting less ever would.

The platform matters too. Feed-based platforms with algorithmic discovery, where content has a longer shelf life, tolerate lower frequency than platforms built around disappearing, in-the-moment content, where showing up regularly is closer to the whole game.

And the goal changes the math. An account built for brand awareness can lean on fewer, higher-production posts. An account trying to drive direct engagement or sales usually needs more frequent, lower-friction content to stay in the conversation.

The consistency trap that’s worse than under-posting

Sporadic bursts — daily for two weeks, then silence for a month — do more damage than a steady, modest schedule. It signals to both the algorithm and the audience that the account isn’t reliable, and it resets whatever momentum the last burst built. A predictable three-a-week beats an unpredictable seven-then-zero, every time.

A realistic starting point

For most small businesses without a dedicated social media hire, two to four posts a week per platform is sustainable and enough to stay visible, as long as it’s consistent. Scale up from there once you know you can actually hold the pace — not before.
